What is PRIME: Leadership?
PRIME: Leadership is an innovative new programme that has been created specifically to develop the leadership capabilities of public sector managers by the National School of Government. Content for the programme was developed in collaboration with Lancaster University Management School.
PRIME:Leadership includes over 20 hours of high quality e-learning on
leadership covering:
- Current thinking on leadership
- Leading people; interpersonal skills
- Developing partnerships
- Strategic thinking; analysing and developing options
- Change and organisational learning; managing change
What are the aims of PRIME: Leadership?
Using an innovative, interactive blend of online and conventional development
methods, PRIME: Leadership focuses on empowering individuals to develop
their capacity as strategic leaders. The programme is carefully designed
to appeal to a variety of learning styles and preferences.
PRIME: Leadership will:
- help develop the ability to think in a strategic way
- challenge the participant to define and re-examine their views and
the leadership practices they may have adopted over time
- inform them about a range of leadership theories and provide examples
of good leadership
- help to enhance the skills participants need to lead and inspire people
by engaging them in a range of challenging interactive tasks
Who is PRIME: Leadership designed for?
The programme has been designed specifically for people in, or about
to enter, senior management positions. These might include:
- members of the Senior Civil Service
- Chief Executives and Senior Managers in the public sector
- those likely to move into such positions
Even experienced and successful leaders are likely to find the programme
helpful in giving them a structure to reflect on their own practice.
Why choose an e-learning tool for leadership development?
For some people, finding the time for a residential development programme
is difficult. PRIME: Leadership offers the learner an opportunity to control
the time, place and pace of their own learning by putting them in the
driving seat. The programme includes a range of high quality interactive
material including:
Your Experience explores the participant’s own opinions
and working practices. It provides a reference point to help them relate
the material presented in the other units to their own experiences.
The Tutorial introduces some of the key theories and concepts
central effective leadership.
Example presents a case study, based on real events, that illustrates
a leadership issue. Many of the examples used are taken directly from
the experience of public service organisations.
In the Challenge the learner is given a hypothetical scenario
to analyse and respond to. The facts will be laid out, and the problem
identified, before they detail their response.
In Thoughts illuminating quotations taken from prominent figures
from all walks of life are offered, designed to provoke and stimulate.
Offline activities contains suggested tasks or challenges
for the participant to carry out away from their PC.
In Next Steps sources of information and suggested topics
for peer discussion are provided. These take the form either of links
to websites or references to relevant literature.
By working through this range of learning units the PRIME: Leadership
participant can benefit from a rich learning experience.
